If your best client were to lose their mail server and the emails on it, how crippling would that be? Most businesses both large and small depend on email. If a company relies on email, you need to have the tools and techniques ready to solve their problems for the day disaster strikes.
Exchange 2007 uses SAN certificates, which allow you to mix several different server names in a single certificate. Generating a certificate can be a problem, as the PowerShell command needed to generate the certificate signing request can be long, and unwieldy – and it’s easy enough to make a mistake when typing in part of a long command.
The requirement for information security certification is spreading from large organisations to small ones. What’s involved, and do you need it?
Microsoft Support Lifecycle
When a new service pack is released, Microsoft will provide either 24 months of support for the previous service pack (for Windows) or 12 months for all other products. Keep an eye on what will need updating when, to stay in support.
If you ask your customers what they know about legislation involving data, the chances are you’ll be horrified by the answers.
The best thing about Spacemonger (www.sixty-five.cc/sm, $24.95) isn’t that its intuitive display of how space is used on a hard drive allows you to pinpoint what’s taking up the space on your hard drives in a matter of seconds. The screen area shows a colour-coded and hierarchical treemap where the size of the box for each directory or file is in proportion to the space it takes on the drive. Hover the mouse over any element to see a popup with more detail, and scroll the mouse wheel to zoom down to level of individual files.
Protect computers from power problems and you can extend their working life as well as avoiding downtime and possible data corruption. Losing data on a laptop or desktop is bad enough, but losing a server to a power surge or power cut can be much more severe, potentially even a threat to the business. Losing a mail server or a major database can lead to serious data corruption that will take you time, perhaps even days, to resolve. During that time, your customer’s business is being impacted, and even if they’ve ignored your advice they’re likely to blame you, so you need to explain the danger and convince them to protect their systems.
Databases store the most valuable information for the businesses you work with and they’re the trickiest systems to back up; some of the largest technology companies in the world have got database backup badly wrong. Losing that data can have serious consequences for the business, to say nothing of the embarrassment quotient for you. Here we explain the essentials of backing up and introduce some specialist tools.

Security is really about putting the right information in the right place for the right people, stopping the wrong people getting at it – and making sure the right people don’t move it into the wrong place while they’re trying to get their job done. Forget the statistics about lost USB sticks; the vast majority of data loss is down to someone who wanted to get the information they needed from A to B when the system isn’t designed to do that even though B is what’s going to make the business money.
